What is MEES
What is MEES
The Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) Regulations, implemented by the government in 2018, aim to enhance the quality of privately rented homes and boost energy efficiency, particularly in lower-performing properties.
These regulations require privately rented properties to achieve a minimum Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E before renewal or renting to new tenants, effectively prohibiting rental of properties with ratings of F or G. This requirement applies to both new and existing tenancies since April 1st, 2020. Landlords can find guidance on compliance with MEES on the gov.uk website.
Additionally, there's a proposal to raise the energy performance standard to a rating of C for new tenancies from 2025 and for all tenancies from 2028, aiming for further improvement in energy efficiency. More information on these proposed plans can be accessed on the gov.uk website.
