Cllr Thomas said:

"The litter problem across the UK is getting worse. Littered streets have a detrimental impact on mental health and safety, as well as the economic development of an area.

“I hope the new Litter Champion Hub Scheme will help to raise awareness about the responsibility we all have as individuals to keep our environment clean by encouraging better litter habits."

Litter Champion Hubs are a new initiative in development by Cllr Thomas. Around 20 premises, including the council’s headquarters at Ebley Mill, St Lawrence’s Church in Stroud, Brimscombe Mill and Minchinhampton Library are set to become hubs.

People visiting the Litter Champion Hubs will be able to help themselves to a litter picker and bin bag, and signs will direct them to the nearest bin where they can deposit the rubbish they collect.

Organisations that would like to become a Litter Champion Hub can contact Gill at cllr.gill.thomas@stroud.gov.uk

Stroud District Council provides more than 1,400 bins for public use across the district and spent £770,000 last year on clearing fly tipping, street sweeping, emptying bins and litter picking.

If you see a litter bin that needs emptying, you can report it on the council’s website Overflowing litter bin
