"Tidal power in the Severn Estuary was the theme of a meeting I attended last week, at the Western Gateway conference in Cardiff.  I heard from members of the Severn Estuary Commission about their work, as an independent expert panel, looking at whether it’s possible to harness the power of the Estuary to generate energy.  

There have been discussions about Severn Estuary tidal schemes for more than a century, with proposals developed for almost thirty different projects! With an increased focus now on renewable energy, it was time take to another look at the evidence to see whether there is indeed a viable solution. The Severn Estuary has one of highest tidal ranges in the world and is estimated to have the potential to generate up to 7% of the UK’s electricity needs. The Commission’s report is expected in March, and will need to consider many issues, not least the protection of the local environment in any possible future project options. https://www.severncommission.co.uk/

Energy is also on the agenda for our Council meeting on Thursday, 24 October, with a motion asking for the Council’s support for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, a global initiative, endorsed by the World Health Organisation and many national and local governments.  There are many other items for up for Council discussion, including our new cultural strategy, budget plans and the Council’s licensing role under the Gambling Act.  

There will also be a proposal to support action to tackle the abuse, harassment and intimidation of people in public life, which was highlighted in a recent BBC news report.

Finally, I’d like to wish good luck to all the competitors in the Stroud Half Marathon this Sunday, and to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who make this community event a great success every year!"
