" `UK income inequality is among the highest in the developed world, and evidence shows that this is bad for almost everyone’. So says the Equality Trust, which reports on economic and social inequality data. It’s clear that people in more equal societies live longer, have better mental health and better chances for a good education, regardless of their background. Community life is stronger where the income gap is narrower, children do better at school, people trust each other more, there is less violence and rates of imprisonment are lower.
As a local council, we see that the existing inequalities in our communities have been exacerbated by the impacts of the pandemic and cost-of-living crisis. It’s more important than ever that we take proactive measures so everyone can have fair access to public services, that they are represented and can have their say on community issues. This work will involve targeting resources to address systemic disadvantages, tackling discrimination, embracing diversity, and promoting community cohesion.
Our new policy for Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Belonging is now open to consultation and we’d welcome your views: https://www.stroud.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/about-the-council/have-your-say/consultations/
As mentioned last week, the district council budget for 2025/26 has been finalised and I’m pleased to report that it was approved by councillors last Thursday. Our spending priorities reflect those in the new Council Plan and include investment in additional electric vehicles for recycling collections, support for nature recovery projects and partnership work to address health inequalities and improve wellbeing.
We’ll also be putting a focus on affordable housing and the private rental sector, working to promote the local economy and stepping up community engagement."
Cllr Catherine Braun, Leader of Stroud District Council
