Stroud District Council has been nominated for a key industry award thanks to its work to protect the safety of its tenants.

The council has been nominated for Safety & Compliance Training & Development Award at the upcoming Association of Safety and Compliance Professionals (ASCP) Awards.

The recognition underscores the council’s dedication to fostering a positive health and safety culture in its housing service which it delivers through a comprehensive training and development programme.

Over the past two years more than 40 training courses have been completed, resulting in officers becoming qualified in essential housing issues such as fire doors, asbestos, legionella, damp and mould and playground inspections.

Eight trainee and apprenticeship roles have been created and partnerships with SGS College, City of Bristol College, local schools and Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service have been developed with practical on-site demonstrations and work experience opportunities.

Tara Skidmore, SDC’s Head of Assets and Investment (council housing) said:

“Our efforts have resulted in a motivated, skilled and confident workforce, improved customer interactions, and higher levels of tenant satisfaction - 81% of our tenants now report feeling satisfied that their home is safe, reflecting our investment in compliance and safety. I’m proud of every member of the team who has committed to ensuring our tenants are safe in their homes.”

Stroud District Council is a social landlord that owns and manages 5,000 council homes.
