Conservation areas are designated by the District Council when an area is recognised as having special architectural or historic significance, with a character or appearance that is worthy of protection. 

There are currently 41 conservation areas within Stroud District, covering a really diverse range of places - from densely populated town centres, such as Stroud, Dursley and Berkeley, to the wide open spaces of Sharpness Old Dock and Stratford Park; from quintessential chocolate-box villages like Bisley and Box, to impressive industrial heritage at places like Stanley Mills and Stroud Station. 

Our earliest conservation area designations took place in the 1970s, and our most recently-designated conservation areas are Sheepscombe and Arlingham, designated in 1993. Since their original designation, some conservation areas have been subject to review and some have undergone boundary changes.

Within conservation areas there are greater restrictions over works that require planning permission. Applications for planning permission for new development in conservation areas are more rigorously assessed, to consider whether proposals are likely to preserve or enhance the special character, appearance and significance of the conservation area.

The Council has adopted Conservation Area Statements (CAS) for some of the conservation areas that have been subject to review and character appraisal. These documents act as supplementary planning information, to help inform the interpretation and application of Development Plan policies (including Local Plan policy ES10). Some adopted CAS include design guidance and management proposals that are specific to individual conservation areas.

If you live in a conservation area and are thinking about carrying out alterations to your property, demolishing a building or carrying out work to trees, it is recommended that you first seek advice from the council, as planning permission may be required.
